Letby medical defence
SIR – As a retired consultant obstetrician and maternity hospital chief executive, I find it very difficult to comprehend why the maternity notes were not made available to Lucy Letby’s original defence team (“Letby baby died from birth trauma, medical expert claims”, report, July 22).
Every student midwife and medical student is taught that the condition of a baby at birth and shortly afterwards is highly dependent on the antecedent pregnancy, labour and delivery. Every neonatologist, paediatrician and neonatal nurse knows this, too. I imagine that every trainee solicitor and barrister is also made aware of it as part of their medical negligence education.
That maternity factors were not taken into consideration in Letby’s defence, in itself, justifies the calls for a retrial.
